OUR WORK IN AUSTRIA
With the implementation of Austria’s new Freedom of Information Act on 1 September 2025, we are launching a national initiative to:
- Monitor compliance with the new law
- Submit model FOI requests to key institutions
- Educate citizens and journalists on their new rights
- Advocate for improved transparency at local, state, and federal levels
- Host webinars and roundtables with experts, authorities, and the media
OUR WORK INTERNATIONALLY – OUR PAST FOI PROJECTS
We have led numerous successful FOI impact litigation initiatives across EU bodies, the Council of Europe, and countries including Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and the United States. Our projects have involved courts, ministries, electoral bodies, municipalities, and inspection authorities.
Highlights include:
- “Transparency of the European Court of Human Rights” – A project presented by Prof. Dr. Jurij Toplak at Cambridge University Law School (2023). The ECHR disclosed numerous previously unpublished case files and applications. In 2021, following our intervention, the ECtHR began releasing documents it had withheld during the pandemic. (Covered in the Daily Express.)
- National election authorities published polling station–level results instead of only district-level aggregates.
- Ballot papers, including those deemed invalid, were disclosed to enable greater electoral oversight.
- Constitutional and administrative courts released files and decisions that were previously inaccessible.
- Sanitary inspection authorities published violation records, raising public awareness and improving hygiene standards in restaurants.
- Health ministries disclosed hospital-specific data on infant mortality, helping families make informed decisions.
- Standardized test results (Matura, elementary, gymnasium) were released at the school level, aiding parents and students in school choice.
- Courts disclosed names of judges and legal entities involved in cases, enhancing judicial transparency.
- Police and inspection agencies disclosed data on fines issued, improving understanding of legal enforcement practices.
- Comprehensive judicial transparency: We initiated efforts to publish all court judgments and case summaries.
- Pending and ongoing Constitutional Court cases were mapped and monitored to promote openness in constitutional adjudication.
- Braille FOI project: Over 200 municipalities received FOI requests in Braille to assess accessibility and legal compliance for blind persons.
- Municipalities’ transparency audits: We submitted FOI requests to over 200 municipalities to assess their openness and compliance.
